Antique Classic Car Shows

A Perfected Past – Antique Classic Car Shows

A classic car show is pure phantasmagoria to any automotive aficionado. Epitomes of automotive elegance, power and performance, classic car shows fuse nostalgia and admiration into one glorious event.

The Auto Show

Entrants must pass certain criteria, including;

• Age of manufacturing;

• Historical accuracy;

• Technical specifications;

• General upkeep, etc.

The cars are divided into classes. There are many types of classes, which vary by each auto show. Classes are determined by:

• Vehicle age;

• Production model and trim;

• Geographic origination;

• Stock condition;

• Colloquial category (i.e. “muscle car”).

Judges rate vehicles based upon historical accuracy, technical specifications, style, etc.

However, the most complicated question is not rating a classic car; it’s deciding what a classic car is. Everyone seems to know, and no one seems to agree.

The Elusive Classic Car

“Classic car” is an elusive term to nail down. Some ardently categorize only 1925-1948 vehicles as classic cars, while some would name a 1969 Dodge Challenger with the same moniker. However, establishing a few general parameters may help to even the waters.

Cars built before the 1920s are generally considered antique or vintage vehicles. Cars produced after the early 1980s are typically classified as “modern-era.” The Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) gives a range of 1924-1948, but insurance industries allow for a “historic vehicle” classification after a car’s 21st birthday. Confused? So is everyone else.

The CCCA gives some general criteria for clarification.

• They were produced and currently exist in limited quantity.

• They were “fine” and “distinctive” creations of their times.

• They were aesthetically beautiful.

• Manufacturing was of premium quality.

• They typify an idyllic standard.

Therefore, one can welcome a 1966 Chevrolet Camaro SS, 1955 Ford Fairlane or 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Super Sport Zagato Spider to the same stage.

Popular Antique Classic Car Shows

• Concours d’Elegance exemplifies flawlessness. The most renowned exhibition is at Pebble Beach, California.

• The CCCA Grand Classics exhibit the best 1924-1948 cars in America.

• Detroit adds new spice to old cars with its Woodward Dream Cruise. Expect to see thousands of hot rods, vintage automobiles and gorgeous classics.

• The Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction bills itself as, “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions.” Most would agree.

• The Route 66 Rendezvous turns the streets of San Bernardino, California into a procession of automotive treasures.

Care to see more? Get to a classic car show.

There are many famous and not so famous antique classic car shows around the country. A few of the most famous are mentioned in the article above, but you can go and see some great cars at that little car show around the corner from your house. Check your area’s classic car show schedule this spring, summer or fall and go out and take a look at these beautiful antique classic cars.

Stop Vehicle Problems Before They Stop You

Stop vehicle problems before they stop you. No one likes to be inconvienenced by car problems during a road trip or on your daily commute. Keep your vehicle on the maintenance schedule as recommended by the manufacturer.

(NAPSI)-Whether you’re taking a road trip or just commuting to work, the likelihood of your vehicle leaving you stranded is greater than you think.

Each year, AAA rescues 29 million stranded motorists. In 2010, the motor club expects it will jump-start or replace nearly 5 million auto batteries with its AAA Mobile Battery Service, and estimates it will change more than 3.5 million flat tires. And while AAA’s well-trained roadside technicians will be able to get three out of five motorists back on the go, more than 11 million drivers will have problems that require their vehicles to be towed-many of which could be avoided with proper maintenance.

Taking care of your vehicle now can cost far less than a major repair later on. AAA recommends two fundamental things you can do to find and fix problems before they happen.

1. Identify a quality repair shop and use that facility for all your vehicle repairs and maintenance so you develop a good working relationship with them and they get to know your car.

One way to find quality auto repair facilities that meet and maintain high professional standards for training, equipment, cleanliness and customer service is to look for the AAA Approved Auto Repair sign. You can also search online at www.AAA.com/Repair.

2. Have your car serviced regularly based on the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. While some maintenance and repair tasks are best left to certified automotive technicians, there are a few basics you can easily check yourself:

• Engine Air Filter

Check the air filter every six months or 7,500 miles by holding it up to a 100-watt lightbulb. If light can be seen through much of the filter, it’s still clean enough to work.

• Battery

Check the battery cables to ensure they are securely attached to the terminals. Clean the terminals if there are any signs of corrosion.

• Tire Pressure

Check and adjust tire pressures at least once a month when the tires are cold- including the spare. The manufacturer’s recommendations can be found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker on the driver’s doorjamb.

• Tire Tread

Check the tread depth by inserting a quarter upside down into a tire groove with Washington’s head facing outward. The tread should cover part of Washington’s head.

• Windshield Washer Fluid

Check the windshield washer fluid reservoir monthly and test the washer spray nozzles for proper operation and aim.

• Windshield Wiper Blades

Check the blades at every oil change or whenever they fail to wipe the glass clean in a single swipe. The rubber inserts usually last six to 12 months.

Texting Driving – Stop Texting, Start Driving

Texting Driving. New texting while driving laws encourage people to stop distracted driving and go hands free. Check out the reasons and find out how to stop using hand held cell phones and texting.

(NAPSI)-The urge to text while driving has become a commonplace in the United States. In fact, more than 25 states have signed or implemented texting while driving laws. That’s good news, since a distraction of any type-whether you are taking your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel or your mind off your driving-can have very serious consequences.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as recently as 2008, nearly 6,000 people died in crashes involving a distracted driver, and more than half a million were injured.

Although the spotlight’s on cell phones and texting, distracted driving encompasses many other activities-from tuning the radio, eating, putting on makeup, reading, looking for something on the floor or in the glove box, and talking or refereeing disagreements in the car. You can do a number of things to break the habit and cut down on your own distracted driving incidents, such as:

• Be Prepared Before You Start Your Car

If you put on makeup, eat, or program your GPS before you hit the road, you’ll cut down on some distractions. If you organize what you need for your final destination before you leave, you won’t need to search while driving.

• Go Hands Free

If you must use the cell phone when driving, invest in technology that will help you keep your eyes on the road. Several installation-free kits are available that can help you go hands free for less than the cost of a ticket.

• Take a Break

Even with a hands-free device, the best idea is to pull over if you must make calls, answer texts or deal with issues involving other passengers.

One way to go hands free is the Parrot Minikit Slim. The speakerphone clips onto your car’s sun visor, and once paired via Bluetooth with your mobile device, it automatically downloads your contact list. Using voice commands, it can dial up anyone in your phonebook and can be turned off and on with the push of one button.

In addition to portable options, another way to go hands free is with an installed product such as the Parrot MKi9200. Installed products are fully integrated into the vehicle’s existing stereo system so phone calls can be heard with the same sound quality as music. In addition, music players such as iPods can be played through the vehicle stereo system via an installed solution.

To learn more, visit the website at www.parrot.com.

The best way to stop texting driving is to go hands free with a device like Parrot. If you use your cell or you text as you drive your car, that is distracted driving and the new texting while driving laws are meant for you. So be careful, drive safely and go hands free.

DWD. Driving While Distracted

Drivers are getting the message texting and driving while distracted are dangerous and people are beginning to pay attention to this fact.

(NAPSI)-A growing number of people are paying attention to the dangers of driving while distracted. According to a recent survey, U.S. drivers say they are talking and texting less while driving than they did a year ago, and they say it’s because they are more aware of what can happen if they are driving while distracted (DWD).

The survey shows that 20 percent of drivers with cell phones say they text while driving and that number jumps to 47 percent for drivers under the age of 35. Of those who admit to texting behind the wheel, 40 percent say they do it less often than they did last year. The survey was sponsored by Nationwide Insurance.

According to the telephone survey of 1,005 U.S. adults conducted by Harris Interactive, 67 percent of drivers admit to talking on their cell phone while driving. Of those who do, 30 percent say they do it less often than they did last year.

While the problem of DWD remains one of the deadliest risks facing drivers, this survey shows that drivers are changing their behavior due to awareness and legislation.

“This is the first survey we’ve seen showing drivers making positive changes in their behavior, but there are still too many drivers who either don’t realize just how dangerous distractions behind the wheel are or are willing to take that risk,” said Bill Windsor, Nationwide’s associate vice president of Consumer Safety. “The stigma now associated with distracted driving may also have fewer people willing to admit they do it, but studies continue to indicate that DWD causes one out of every four U.S. crashes.”

Hands-free Not Used Widely

While hands-free technology is readily available, two-thirds of drivers surveyed say they rarely or never use the devices. Most drivers who do use a hands-free device report feeling safer when doing so, although nearly one in four of these drivers say they talk more often since they started using the hands-free device.

“This survey shows that it is likely that when handheld cell phone laws are passed that a number of people will switch to hands-free devices and their usage of the phones will actually go up,” said Windsor. “More research needs to be done on the extent of crash risk related to the cognitive distraction aspect of cell phone use. We need to be sure that for this segment of heavy users it does not actually result in increased crashes.”

Practical Tips For Teen Drivers

Tips for teen drivers where you will get some practical tips for keeping America’s youth safe when behind the wheel. Teach your teens about the dangers of DWD. Driving while distracted.

(ARA) – With the growing use of cell phones and text messaging, it’s not surprising that risky and distracted driving are the main causes of teen motor vehicle accidents. A 2009 Pew survey estimates that 26 percent of all American teens have texted while driving, and 43 percent have talked on a cell phone while driving.

Today’s teen drivers face an increasing number of risks and distractions, making safe driving habits more important than ever. At the same time, teen driving laws are evolving, and fewer public schools across the country can afford to offer drivers’ education.

Many community organizations and even large businesses have stepped in to proactively help teens learn the importance of practicing safe driving skills. For example, UPS, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and UPS NASCAR driver David Ragan are partnering for the second consecutive year to present UPS Road Code, a comprehensive safe driving course, based on UPS’s own driver training programs, to help teach teens across the nation the importance of safe driving and defensive driving skills.

“When I’m on the race track, I’m surrounded by about 40 other cars while driving sometimes more than 150 mph. I can’t afford any distractions,” says Ragan, UPS Road Code spokesperson. “Defensive driving is a priority for me on and off the track, and I think there needs to be greater education for American teenagers on what it means to be a safe driver.”

A teen’s first priority while driving should be to pay attention to the highway. Some helpful tips for keeping their eyes on the road include:

* Give enough distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you to allow you a view of all your surroundings. A driver should be able to see the rear tires of the vehicle in front of you.

* Identify “stale” green lights — a light the driver did not see turn green — and prepare to stop if it turns red before you reach it.

* Be observant and expect other drivers to do unpredictable things while driving around you, such as speeding and changing lanes.

* Use your signals, lights and horn to communicate with other drivers on the road.

* Establish cushion space by delaying your start from an intersection by three seconds after the vehicle in front of you has moved.

* Check your mirrors every five to eight seconds because hazards that can cause an accident aren’t always in front of you.

Learning the risks and consequences of driving, plus hands-on experience behind the wheel, is essential to improve driving among teens. Drivers’ education, graduated licensing systems and teen-driving programs provide youth important information and the opportunity to practice safe driving. 09 Jul 10 Four Important Steps To Take Before Buying A Car

Four Important Steps To Take Before Buying A Car

Here are four important steps to take before purchasing your next vehicle. Get car buying tips from the experts.

(ARA) – It’s that time of year – summer car-buying season is in full swing. Many dealers are offering great incentives to move cars off their lots to make room for the arrival of new models in the fall. Since buying a car is one of the biggest investments many of us make, it is important to be prepared so you can drive off the lot confident in the purchasing decision you’ve made.

Despite the economic hardships the auto industry has faced, financing a vehicle is still possible. Once you’ve researched reviews and valuations, and decided on the vehicle you want to buy, consider these four tips from Experian Automotive:

1. Check Your Credit Score

Knowing where your credit history falls in the range of risk is more important now than ever before. Auto lenders use scoring models to help predict whether or not you could become delinquent on your auto loan payments. An auto lender typically receives a credit score that emphasizes your current and previous vehicle payment history. While they may use different credit scores for potential buyers than traditional lenders do, that simply means you shouldn’t focus on the number, but on your level of risk and what in your credit history most influenced that risk. Knowing where your credit history falls in the range of risk can help you anticipate the interest rates you may qualify for and the amount of the down payment you will need to make. Consequently, knowing where you stand may give you the leverage you need to negotiate for better rates. You can get your credit report and score at www.experian.com.

2. Know How Much You Can Afford To Spend On A Down Payment

It’s important to know how much you can afford to spend on a down payment before you go to the dealer and ask for the keys. If you are able to offer a solid down payment on a car, you will be in a better position to negotiate the final sale price of the vehicle as well as the terms of your loan. And the lower your credit score, the larger the down payment you may be required to make. Being aware of how much cash you have to put down on a car can empower you to secure an even better deal and it can also help you realize what type of car you can truly afford.

3. Research Loan Options On Your Own

It’s a good idea to get pre-qualified for an auto loan before visiting an auto dealer. Knowing what loan options you have may influence the dealer to beat an offer from your bank with a better interest rate and lower monthly payments. Before heading to the dealership, check with your bank or credit union to see what loan rates are available.

4. Request Your Vehicle History Report

If you decide to buy a used car or truck, you should always have a licensed mechanic physically inspect the vehicle. You should also conduct your own inspection of the vehicle’s past by requesting a vehicle history report from your dealer or pulling a report yourself at AutoCheck.com. The report will provide you with all reported events for that vehicle (odometer readings, vehicle registrations, title transfers, accident damage, emissions inspections) in addition to any issues with the vehicle’s title, any unexpected odometer readings, whether the vehicle was ever a rental or used as a service vehicle, and your AutoCheck score. This score is a tool that enables you to understand a vehicle’s past quickly and easily, compare it to other vehicles, and lower the risk of buying a vehicle with undetected problems.

Buying a car is an exciting time in everyone’s life, so before you rush out to the dealership, make sure you are properly prepared to get the most bang for your buck. Educating yourself on your financial standing as well as the current auto loan market and the history of the car you want to buy will help you drive off the lot with the knowledge that you made a sound investment.

What Are CO2 Powered Cars?

What Are CO2 Powered Cars? Learn how these CO2 cars are similar to a pinewood derby vehicle. Find out a little about these car designs and the ideas behind them.

CO2 powered cars are model dragsters that are propelled by the thrust from a CO2 cartridge. These cars are routinely used in middle school and high school-level engineering classes as a way for students to learn about the dynamics of car design.

It’s similar to Pinecar racing, except the cartridge mechanism guarantees cars can be launched simultaneously with the same amount of power. As a result, race wins are purely a matter of good aerodynamic design.

The CO2 powered cars body is made from balsa wood carved and painted by the designer. A hole is drilled in the back of the cars to hold an eight gram CO2 cartridge, a size commonly used in seltzer bottles and bicycle tire inflation systems. Wheels are attacked via two axles which run through the body. Two eyelets are also attached to the underside of the car through which a length of fishing line is run. This line is attached to the track, keeping the car on course. Distance between the axles, distance between the eyelets, and specifications for the wheels vary depending on the race sanctioning body.

The race takes place on a twenty meter (65′ 7 1/2″) track. The CO2 powered cars are connected to launch pods which have needles that breach the CO2 cartridges. The pods and the race timer are activated simultaneously by a single switch, eliminating human reaction time. This timer is stopped when the cars trip an infrared light at the end of the track. Races often last less than a second: That’s an average speed of over 70mph.

Numerous regional and state-wide competitions exist for these cars, but the premier national event is the Technology Student Association’s Dragster Design Challenge. Judging is based on both aesthetics and performance. Cars are most often disqualified for being underweight: entries must weigh at least 55 grams (1.9 ounces.)

Look for our next article on CO2 powered cars. It is titled The Fastest CO2 Cars and you can find out about fast racers and the times that have been recorded by the Technology Student Association Dragster Design Challenge.

06 Jul 10 Separate Fuel Facts From Fiction

Separate Fuel Facts From Fiction

(NC)—According to a new Angus Reid survey, over one-third of Canadians asked don’t realize the benefits to their vehicle engine just by selecting a high-quality gasoline, and nearly one-third don’t bother to seek out the correct grade of gasoline as recommended by their vehicle’s manufacturer.

Here are a few useful fuel facts that can help keep your vehicle in good running condition and even help prevent costly repairs down the road:

1. Regular maintenance will help keep your vehicle running longer and can help save money at the pump:

Fact

Changing the engine air filter, oil changes and transmission checkups can help your vehicle run more efficiently and avoid major expenses in the future. Following a vehicle manufacturer’s motor oil recommendation can improve gasoline mileage by one to two per cent*. Keeping your engine properly tuned can improve gas mileage by an average of four per cent*.

2.) All gasolines are the same:

Myth

Gasoline choice plays a vital role in the cleanliness and performance of an engine. Audi, BMW, Honda and Volkswagen believe that high-quality gasolines that are Top Tier-certified will help keep engines cleaner than gasolines containing only the lowest additive concentration (LAC) set by government standards. For example, Shell nitrogen enriched gasolines are Top Tier-certified and can help protect your engine against gunk and even help clean the gunk left behind from lower-quality gasolines, which can build up in as little as 80 kilometers.

3.) Octane levels in fuel don’t really make a difference:

Myth

If you use a lower octane fuel in an engine designed to use higher octane, engine knocking may occur, causing the car to shudder and lose performance.

4.) A higher octane level indicates the very best fuel for my vehicle:

Myth

It’s important to remember that “premium grade” only references octane level, and doesn’t always equal “premium quality”. Using a high-quality premium gasoline, like Shell V-Power gasoline, can provide benefits that go beyond octane. Shell V-Power gasoline contains a nitrogen enriched cleaning system with five times the amount of cleaning agents required by Canadian government standards, helping your vehicle achieve optimum performance.

Estimates for fuel savings from sensible driving are based on studies and literature reviews performed by Energy and Environmental Analysis, Inc., Washington, DC.

05 Jul 10 Good Habits At The Pump Mean Better Engine Performance

By Scott Abbott

Good Habits At The Pump Mean Better Engine Performance

Good habits at the pump mean better engine performance. Find out more about Octane, Cleaning Agents and Top Tier-certified Gasoline so you can protect your vehicle.

(NC) For most drivers, filling up at the pump is an automatic routine. But considering that cars are typically one of our largest investments, it’s important to remember that building good habits for the way we take care of them can mean the difference between trouble-free driving and costly repairs. According to a recent Angus Reid survey, one in four Canadians asked don’t keep up with the recommended maintenance schedule for their vehicles and one in three aren’t seeking the correct grade of fuel as recommended by their vehicle’s manufacturer.

While most engines will work regardless of the fuel grade or quality, a big part of engine maintenance is making sure you select the right type of gasoline for your vehicle. And ensuring your fuel has enough cleaning agents is a great head start to protecting your engine.

Octane

You probably associate octane with the number you see at the pumps, but the technical explanation for octane is the measure of the fuel’s ability to resist “engine knock”. If you use a lower octane rating in an engine designed to use higher octane fuel, engine knocking might occur, causing the car to shudder and lose performance.

If your vehicle’s engine is designed to run on regular grade unleaded gasoline, that’s all it should require. However, using octane above the recommended level won’t harm the engine. If you’re experiencing engine knocking in an older car that recommends low octane, using a higher octane grade may help correct the problem. If you have a performance or luxury vehicle that requires a higher octane level, using that specified rating will help achieve optimal engine performance.

Cleaning Agents

The enemy of engine efficiency is engine “gunk”, or harmful carbon deposits left behind on intake valves and fuel injectors. This gunk acts like a sponge, absorbing and trapping gasoline.

Choosing a gasoline for your vehicle is like choosing a meal for your body — healthy habits can make a difference. Yet over half of Canadians surveyed don’t take any action to protect or clean their engines from the build-up of harmful carbon deposits.

Fortunately, preventing engine gunk is easy. For example, all Shell nitrogen enriched gasolines are designed to protect your engine from gunk and even help clean engine gunk left by lower-quality gasolines.

Top Tier-certified Gasoline

No matter what octane level is required for your vehicle, be certain you’re using a high-quality gasoline that meets Top Tier gasoline standards. Industry research confirms that a clean engine can result in better fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and overall optimal engine performance.

The Worlds Fastest Car

What is the Worlds Fastest car? Determining which is the fastest car in the world will depend on how you define fast.

We will talk about the fastest accelerating car in the world, the fastest cars top speed, the car that had the fastest time at Nürburgring, the worlds fastest street car, legal street car that is. In other words the Bugatti Veyron, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, the Pagani Zonda R and the Maxximus G-Force Find out more about the worlds fastest cars and how they got the reputation for being the fastest.

The Bugatti Veyron

The fastest accelerating car in the world is the Bugatti Veyron.

The Bugatti Veyron, manufactured by Bugatti Automobiles was a pet project of Ferdinand Piech. Peich was a former CEO of VW. Built to be the fastest production car in the world, the Veyron has an 8.0 L W16 engine. This powerhouse produces 1020 HP, 992 ft-lbf. torque. In 2.6 seconds this car can reach 60 mph. In 9.9 seconds the Bugatti Veyron can hit 100 mph and return to 0.

The Veyron weights as much as some trucks, weighting in at four thousand five hundred pounds. How many of the fastest accelerating car in the world were sold? 200 of the Veyron were sold with a price tag of 1.1 million dollars each during it’s production period.

One famous owner we all are familiar with is Simon Cowell of American Idol fame. Even if you don’t always agree with Simons Idol choices, you have to love his choice of cars.

The SSC Ultimate Aero TT

The record for the fastest cars top speed in the world is the SSC Ultimate Aero TT. So if it is speed you are looking for this would be considered the worlds fastest car. The Ultimate Aero TT was built by Shelby Super cars. It wasn’t designed by Carrol Shelby as we would expect. It was designed by Jerod Shelby who was a medical equipment designer. In 2001 Jerod began to design cars and came up with a Super car of his very own.

Under the hood of the Ultimate Aero TT twin turbo 7.01 V 8 engines produce 1183 HP along with 1112 ft-lbf torque. This car, unlike the Veyron, weights a slight 2750 pounds. To put this in understandable terms, the Ultimate Aero TT weights the same as a Ford Focus. Makes you wonder where all that power comes from, doesn’t it?

The Ultimate Aero TT actually reached 256 MPH and taking the title of the worlds taking the title of the worlds fastest production vehicle from the Veyron. It is believed that the TT could reach over 270 mph but was never put on a track that was long enough to test that theory. There were not many of these super cars built, only 25 TT’s and with a cost of 645,000.00 I can understand why there wasn’t a demand for more.

The Pagani Zonda R

The fastest production car with the fastest time at Nürburgring was the Pagani Zonda R. Some automotive manufacturers use Nürburgring time as a standard to rate their production cars lap times. One of the most difficult tracks in the history of motor sports it is a great track to test a vehicles suspension tuning.

The Pagani Zonda R is the production car that owns the track record at Nürburgring. The Pagini’s time is 6:47 with an AMG V 12 that creates 739 HP with 523 ft-pounds torque. Another light weight, the Pangini R weights in at 2358 pounds, not much less than the Ultimate Aero TT.

The Pagini R design makes use of a F 1 vehicles technology with it’s use of Telemetry recordings. These recordings allow car drivers and crew to study the driving techniques used on the track. IF you didn’t order your R right away, chances are you didn’t get one. Only 15 will be made and each will be over the one million dollar mark.

The Maxximus G-Force

The Worlds fastest street car, correction, I mean the fastest legal street car is the Maxximus G-Force. Sounds fast, doesn’t it? How did a Ultima GTR become the worlds fastest street car? Well, a little reengineering that allows it to hold a Chevy twin turbo seven liter block.

This twin turbo seven can produce 1500 ft lbf torque along with 1600 HP. And it does it with a three speed automatic transmission. In 2.0 seconds flat it can go from 0 mph to 60. Give it 4.5 seconds and it is going 100. The Maxximus G-Force may be the worlds fastest street car, but it will never be mass produced.

These Supercars Are The Worlds Fastest Cars

The Supercars are often describe as a ultrahigh end exotic vehicle that is superior to most other cars made. The cars we have shown you in our article are definately more expensive, faster or more powerful than most cars in the world today. We find these Supercars so appealing. They are sexy and they are hot. It’s fun to see them and to read about them.

The Bugatti Veyron, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, the Pagani Zonda R and the The Maxximus G-Force all have something in common. A couple things actually. They are very expensive, they are very sleek and each of them qualifies as the worlds fastest car in one category or another.
